Orthotics Q & A

What are the benefits of custom orthotics?

Many drugstores have a whole aisle dedicated to over-the-counter inserts and arch supports. While it’s possible to enjoy some initial relief with the use of these one-size-fits-all inserts, they quickly flatten out and stop providing support.

Given these concerns, it is important to get fitted for orthotics that are custom-made by a podiatrist to address the problem correctly.

Custom orthotics can help with the following problems:

  • Bunions or hammertoes
  • Heel pain or plantar fasciitis
  • Unexplained arch pain
  • Other

Orthotics help to alleviate painful bunion, hammertoe pain.  They can also provide extra support and decrease the risk of injuries for athletes and active individuals.

How are custom orthotics made?

At the office of Dr. Scott Rubenstein, he conducts a thorough foot evaluation to diagnose any underlying foot or ankle conditions. Dr. Rubenstein also discusses each patient’s lifestyle so he can better understand how the orthotics need to be designed.

Dr. Rubenstein generally uses high-tech digital imaging computer model to get specific foot measurements allowing for the most precise custom foot orthotic possible. He then sends the information electronically to the lab where the orthotics are made.   While the digital scan takes only a few minutes, the fabrication of the custom foot orthotics typically takes about 2 weeks.

Orthotics typically last for 3 years and can be moved from shoe to shoe.

Once the lab sends the orthotics back to Dr. Rubenstein’s office, he ensures that they fit properly to best treat the underlying problem. He also observes how the patient walks with the custom orthotics and makes any adjustments or changes as needed.

How often should custom orthotics be used?

Plan on wearing the custom orthotics every day. Part of the reason Dr. Rubenstein spends so much time getting to know each patient and understand their daily routine is to ensure they get the orthotics that are right for them.

Some men and women may need more than one pair of orthotics, depending on their lifestyle and the shoes they wear. For example, full sport type orthotics may be necessary when at the gym, but the same person’s work shoes may only have room for slimmer dress type custom orthotics. Dr. Rubenstein will order the right type of orthotics for each patient so that they may be worn on a regular basis.
